Hydro Map

Concept and objective
The hydrogeological map is one of the pioneer projects in the Gulf region, which contributed to the identification of different specifications of reservoirs and aquifers, thereby allowing a major role in supporting agricultural development and the achievement of sustainable food security in the Sultanate.

The project has contributed in providing valuable data on water resources in the Sultanate including but not limited to identifying drilling sites for future exploratory projects. Also, it will allow easy identification of water aquifers, water quality and the areas that suffer from water shortages which makes it easier for the Ministry to take appropriate actions with regard to the development of water situation which is unstable in general, taking into account the needs and requirements necessary for agricultural development.

Components of hydrogeological Map

The project included the collection and processing of available water data from exploration drilling projects in the Sultanate carried out by the Ministry since the mid-seventies and until the present time. Also focused on rehabilitation and training of technical team of the project on the methods, techniques and various programs used in the preparation and production of maps.
Oman's hydrogeological map illustrates main aquifers such as alluvial reservoirs (Quaternary) in areas like Al Dhahirah, Al Batinah, Al Dakhliyah and Al Sharqiyah and tertiary reservoirs (Al Fars Group in northern of Al Massarat reservoir, Umm ER Rudhumah reservoirs in Al Nejd area and Adunab reservoirs in Salalah plain) and Wadi Rawnab and the low crossing in Al Wusta area, which is freshwater on top of the regional saline groundwater
The map also includes the most important sites of seawater desalination plants, springs, main falaj, caves, main dams, well fields protection areas, the direction of groundwater movement and increasing rate of salinity.
A hydrogeological database was created through the project. It includes collection of hydrogeological data for wells such as identification number, coordinates, total depth, water surface level, altitude, depth of refineries pipes, salinity, productivity, hydraulic characteristics of aquifer and the type of geological formation of the aquifer. This database system was linked to geographic information systems
